Senior Medical Specialist (Paediatric Cardiologist)

Job Description

  • Provide specialized assessment, diagnosis, and management of paediatric cardiac conditions including congenital and acquired heart diseases.
  • Perform and interpret paediatric cardiac investigations including ecg, echocardiography, and other relevant diagnostic tests.
  • Provide timely and accurate clinical reports to guide patient management and treatment.
  • Manage both inpatient and outpatient paediatric cardiology cases.
  • Provide emergency consultation and management of critically ill paediatric cardiac patients
  • Coordinate referrals for interventional cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery where indicated and co-manage post-procedure follow-up care.
  • Provide expert consultation services to paediatricians, surgeons, neonatologists, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team discussions to facilitate comprehensive patient care.
  • Educate patients, parents, and caregivers on diagnosis, treatment options, procedures, lifestyle modifications, long-term follow-up, and transition to adult cardiac care services.
  • Participate in continuous medical education (cme) and continuous professional development activities.
  • Mentor and train medical officers, paediatricians, interns, nurses, and other healthcare workers.
  • Participate in teaching activities for students and trainees attached to the hospital.
  • Conduct clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives within paediatric cardiology services.
  • Participate in clinical research, congenital heart disease registries, and publication of scientific findings.
  • Promote evidence-based practice and contribute to the development of clinical protocols and guidelines.
  • Participate in clinical audits, research, and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Promote evidence-based practice in paediatric cardiology care.
  • Monitor clinical outcomes and recommend improvements in service delivery.
  • Contribute to the establishment, strengthening, and expansion of paediatric cardiology services within the hospital.
  • Participate in planning and implementation of paediatric cardiac outreach programmes and screening initiatives.
  • Ensure proper utilization, maintenance, and safeguarding of cardiology equipment and departmental resources.
  • Support efficient patient flow, waiting list management, and continuity of care.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor from time to time.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Served for at least three (3) years in a comparable and relevant position of responsibility at a senior management level in the public service or private sector
  • Master of medicine (mmed) in paediatrics and child health or equivalent qualification.
  • Bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery (mbchb) or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
  • Sub-specialty training (fellowship or equivalent) in paediatric cardiology from a recognized institution.
  • Registration with the kenya medical practitioners and dentists council (kmpdc).
  • Recognition as a specialist in paediatrics and paediatric cardiology by kmpdc (where applicable).
  • Valid practicing license issued by kmpdc.
  • Valid professional indemnity insurance cover.
  • At least one (1) year relevant experience in paediatric cardiology or a busy tertiary paediatric unit.
  • Competence in paediatric cardiac diagnostics and interpretation (ecg, echocardiography, etc.).
  • Strong clinical judgement and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in computer applications and hospital information systems.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and ethical medical practice.
