Senior Medical Specialist (Paediatric Intensivist)
Job Description
- Provide specialized assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of critically ill infants, children, and adolescents admitted to the paediatric accident and emergency unit.
- Lead the provision of advanced life support and critical care interventions, including mechanical ventilation, haemodynamic monitoring, and organ support therapies.
- Coordinate the admission, management, and discharge of patients within the paediatric accident and emergency unit.
- Conduct daily ward rounds and ensure evidence-based management of critically ill paediatric patients.
- Respond to paediatric emergencies and provide consultation for critically ill children across the hospital.
- Perform and supervise specialized procedures within the scope of paediatric intensive care practice.
- Ensure timely and accurate documentation of patient care plans, clinical outcomes, and discharge summaries.
- Lead multidisciplinary teams in the management of complex paediatric cases.
- Provide expert consultation services to paediatricians, surgeons, anaesthesiologists, emergency physicians, and other clinicians.
- Develop and implement clinical protocols, guidelines, and standard operating procedures for paediatric critical care.
- Participate in mortality and morbidity reviews, clinical audits, and quality assurance initiatives.
- Coordinate referrals and transfers of critically ill children requiring specialized interventions.
- Provide mentorship and supervision to medical officers, paediatric residents, interns, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.
- Participate in continuous medical education (cme) and continuous professional development activities.
- Support training programs in paediatric emergency care, resuscitation, and critical care.
- Participate in academic activities and teaching programs within the hospital.
- Conduct and participate in clinical research, audits, and quality improvement initiatives related to paediatric critical care.
- Promote evidence-based practice and contribute to scientific publications and presentations.
- Monitor key performance indicators and recommend strategies to improve patient outcomes and service delivery.
- Participate in the development and implementation of innovative paediatric critical care services.
- Support planning, development, and expansion of paediatric intensive care services.
- Ensure proper utilization and maintenance of critical care equipment and resources.
- Participate in workforce planning, scheduling, and resource allocation within the paediatric accident and emergency unit.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, patient safety standards, infection prevention protocols, and relevant regulatory requirements.
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor from time to time.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Served for at least three (3) years in a comparable and relevant position of responsibility at a senior management level in the public service or private sector
- Master of medicine (mmed) in paediatrics and child health or equivalent qualification.
- Bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery (mbchb) or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
- Fellowship or equivalent sub-specialty training in paediatric intensive care, paediatric critical care, or paediatric emergency and critical care medicine from a recognized institution.
- Registration with the kenya medical practitioners and dentists council (kmpdc).
- Recognition as a specialist in paediatrics and paediatric intensive care by kmpdc, where applicable.
- Valid practicing license issued by kmpdc.
- Valid professional indemnity insurance cover.
- At least three (3) years of relevant post-specialization experience in paediatric intensive care or a busy tertiary healthcare facility.
- Demonstrated competence in advanced paediatric life support, mechanical ventilation, invasive monitoring, and critical care procedures.
- Certification in paediatric advanced life support (pals) or equivalent will be an added advantage.
- Strong leadership, analytical, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and multidisciplinary team collaboration skills.
- Proficiency in computer applications and hospital information systems.
- High level of integrity, professionalism, and commitment to ethical medical practice.
