The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) is a semi-autonomous government agency established in June 2004 and legally constituted under the KMA Act, 2006. Operating under the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development, KMA is tasked with regulating, coordinating, and overseeing maritime affairs in Kenya
KMA’s core functions include administering the Merchant Shipping Act, coordinating maritime policies, maintaining a ship registry, ensuring maritime safety and security, and managing search and rescue operations. The authority also enforces environmental protection measures, oversees seafarer training and welfare, and regulates inland waterway shipping.
