National Legal Aid Service

The National Legal Aid Service (NLAS) is a state agency established under the Legal Aid Act, 2016, to promote access to justice in Kenya. It provides legal aid services to eligible persons who cannot afford legal representation, particularly vulnerable and marginalized individuals and communities. NLAS offers legal advice, assistance, representation, mediation, and public legal education on various legal matters. The agency works with courts, government institutions, lawyers, civil society organizations, and other justice-sector stakeholders to improve access to justice. Through its services, NLAS helps protect people’s legal rights, promotes equality before the law, and supports a fair, accessible, and effective justice system.
