Medical Specialist I (Neurosurgeon)
Job Description
- Diagnose, evaluate, and manage patients with disorders affecting the brain, spine, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and related structures.
- Perform elective and emergency neurosurgical procedures in accordance with established professional standards and protocols.
- Manage patients with traumatic brain injuries, spinal injuries, intracranial hemorrhages, brain tumors, hydrocephalus, congenital neurological disorders, and other neurosurgical conditions.
- Conduct pre-operative assessments and formulate appropriate treatment plans.
- Provide post-operative management and follow-up care for neurosurgical patients.
- Participate in intensive care management of critically ill neurosurgical patients.
- Provide emergency neurosurgical consultation and intervention during on-call duties.
- Provide specialist consultation services to clinicians and healthcare teams on neurosurgical conditions and treatment options.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings involving neurology, intensive care, trauma, oncology, orthopedics, radiology, rehabilitation, and other specialties.
- Support clinical decision-making through expert assessment and management recommendations.
- Develop and implement evidence-based clinical protocols for neurosurgical care.
- Participate in continuous medical education (cme) programs and other professional development activities.
- Mentor and supervise medical officers, interns, residents, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals.
- Support training and development of healthcare workers involved in neurosurgical patient care.
- Participate actively in departmental, clinical, and hospital meetings.
- Contribute to the development of specialized neurosurgical training programs within the institution.
- Conduct clinical research and contribute to scientific publications in neurosurgery and related fields.
- Participate in clinical audits, quality assurance programs, and performance improvement initiatives.
- Promote evidence-based practice and adoption of advances in neurosurgical care.
- Support data collection, analysis, and reporting on neurosurgical outcomes and service delivery indicators.
- Participate in planning, development, and expansion of neurosurgical services within the hospital.
- Ensure proper utilization, maintenance, and safeguarding of neurosurgical equipment and resources.
- Support implementation of patient safety, infection prevention, and quality management programs.
- Ensure compliance with professional standards, hospital policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with hospital management in strategic planning for specialized surgical services.
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor from time to time.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Possesses a minimum of three (3) years’ experience serving in a comparable position within the public or private sector.
- Master’s degree in master of medicine (mmed) in neurosurgery or an equivalent specialist qualification recognized by the kenya medical practitioners and dentists council (kmpdc).
- Bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery (mbchb) or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
- Registration with the kenya medical practitioners and dentists council (kmpdc).
- Recognition as a specialist neurosurgeon by the kenya medical practitioners and dentists council.
- Valid practicing license issued by the kmpdc.
- Valid professional indemnity insurance cover.
- At least one (1) year relevant working experience as a neurosurgeon in a recognized and busy healthcare institution.
- Demonstrated competence in performing elective and emergency neurosurgical procedures.
- Knowledge of current neurosurgical techniques, patient safety standards, and clinical governance requirements.
- Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
- Strong analytical, diagnostic, surgical, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in computer applications and hospital information systems.
- Demonstrated integrity, professionalism, and commitment to ethical medical practice.
- Satisfy the requirement of chapter six of the constitution of kenya
