Job Description
Principal Animal Health Officer
For appointment to this, an officer must; –
i) Have served in the grade of Senior Animal Health Officer CSG 9/ JG ‘L’ for a minimum period of three (3) years or in a comparable and relevant position in the wider public service;
ii) Have a Bachelor’s degree in any of the following disciplines: Animal Health Management; Animal Production, Animal Production and Health Management; Environmental Health Sciences, Livestock Economics or Health Extension from a recognized institution;
iii) Have certificate in Senior Management Course lasting not less than four weeks from a recognized institution;
iv) Be registered by the Kenya Veterinary Board;
v) Have certificate in computer applications from a recognized institution and
vi) Have shown merit and ability in work performance, including leadership and supervision of staff in field of work.
Duties and responsibilities at this level will entail; supervising veterinary farms; ensuring maintenance of cold chain facilities; sustaining quarantine status in quarantine stations and holding grounds; and giving advice on dip designing, siting, appraising construction; supervising of tick control activities, managing of animal health information systems, organizing vaccination teams; preparing of animal health staff training needs; coordinating of animal health programs and projects; mobilization of community for disease control intervention, monitoring and evaluation of Animal health programs and carrying out participatory appraisal on disease control; organizing farmers’ training on disease control measures; coordinating vaccination and animal identification activities; carrying out simple treatment of animals; participating in disease search, collecting and collating data on animal health and breeding; compiling slaughter house records and technical reports; organizing animal health field demonstrations and agricultural shows; undertaking equipment sterilization, sample collection, packaging and dispatch; coordinating inspection of livestock stock routes and artificial insemination services; managing experimental animal rearing units; issuing of livestock movement permits; enforcing slaughterhouse hygiene and meat transport regulations and inspection of retail outlets of foods of animal origin; advising on construction and maintenance of farm structures; and inspecting and verifying of imports and export consignments of animals and animal products.
