Job Description

Train Operations Manager

Reporting to:           General Manager – Operations
Employment type:   Five (5) years contract, renewable subject to retirement age and performance.
Work Station:           Nairobi
Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provision of operational strategies, plans and policies for achievement of safe, efficient and effective railway transportation services.
  2. Guides in ensuring compliance with Quality Management System, risk management in the division by ensuring that passenger service processes meet the requirements of ISO Standards.
  3. Leads in preparation of train operations schedules to achieve optimal asset utilization and rail track capacity.
  4. Leads in evaluation of operations performance of the train’s operations division.
  5. Participates in formulation, preparation and implementation of the corporation’s business development policies and strategies in relation to train operations.
  6. Participates in identifying, reviewing and implementation of new technologies in train operations management
  7. Leads in formulation and implementation of the Safety Management Plans (SMP).
  8. Participates in rail incident and accident investigations for the purpose of identifying the root cause and implementing remedial action to stop recurrence.
  9. Leads in preparation of operational cost structures to inform the development of tariffs and fares.
  10. Coordinates implementation of the division’s performance contracting targets, and work plans in achieving departmental objectives
  11. Identifies and develops plans & procedures to mitigate risks in trains operations.
  12. Implementation of new resolutions, directives and audit recommendations.
  13. Prepares performance reports of the division General Manager Operations.
  14. Develops the annual budget and procurement & disposal plans for the division and approval of expenditure.
  15. Development and implementation of regulations governing train operations.
  16. Provides appropriate operational information to facilitate preparation of haulage business contracts.
  17. Appraise direct reports and participates in the identification of staff training needs, manpower requirement, staff motivation and development
  18. Provide leadership in the development and implementation of corruption prevention and mitigation strategies.
  19. Guides in implementation and review department service delivery charter to enhance accountability and transparency in service delivery.
  20. Guides in implementation of principles of Corporate Governance, relevant national policies, guidelines and directives.
  21. Foster conducive corporate culture that promotes ethical practices and good governance in line with the Constitution of Kenya 2010.

Requirements of the Position

  1. Master’s Degree in Engineering/Business or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution;
  2. Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/Commerce/Economics/Business or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution;
  3. Member of relevant professional body and in good standing;
  4. A management course lasting not less than four (4) weeks from a recognized institution will be an added advantage.
  5. A minimum of Ten (10) years relevant working experience, Five (5) of which must be in Senior Management.

  3. Valid Tax Compliance Certificate from Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA);
  4. Current Clearance from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC); and
  5. Current Report from an approved Credit Reference Bureau (CRB).
