The National Drought Management Authority was instituted under the NDMA Act of 2016 (commenced April 21, 2016) as Kenya’s lead agency for drought risk management . It coordinates early warning systems, contingency planning, and strategic projects—such as water harvesting, reforestation, soil conservation, and social safety nets (e.g. the Hunger Safety Net Programme)—to build resilience in 23 arid and semi‑arid counties . NDMA operates a Drought Information Service, publishes monthly bulletins categorizing drought phases (Normal to Emergency), and leads biannual food‑security assessments . It also plays a pivotal role in coordinating among government bodies, NGOs, communities, and development partners, while fostering knowledge sharing, policy formulation, and public awareness (ndma.go.ke).
